The area around modern Siracusa has many ancient ruins. Above are the Ara of Hiero II (first two pictures) an ancient Greek altar, and the Ear of Dionysius (fourth picture), which was used as a prison or slave pen and has remarkable acoustic properties.

Above is the Greek Theatre, one of the most impressive of its kind in Sicily (but not even close to Epidaurus). Stone from the upper sections and the stage were removed for the fortifications on Ortigia. The first two rows of pictures show the theatre from below and the theatre from above, respectively. The third row shows the upper section, and the middle picture shows where water is piped into the theatre. Water runs through the theatre, and today these sections are covered by grates (these grates can be seen in the right and left pictures in the third row above).
