On May 12, 2002, the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge was opened for pedestrian traffic. This bridge is the most visible part of the Big Dig, and will replace the old double decker bridge (seen in the bottom row of pictures) currently carrying I-93 over the Charles river. The towers are each 270 feet tall and support a 745 foot long, 183 foot wide main span in addition to the 420 foot and 295 foot spans connecting to shores. The full length of the bridge wasn't open, so the path went from the Fleet center side to just past the far tower and back. As luck would have it, the rain started just in time to make the entire event nice and wet.
