The Royal Palace, or Palácio Nacional da Ajuda, was built to replace the palace destroyed by fire in 1795, but its inhabitants were forced into exile in 1807, before construction had completed (as shown in the center picture above).

Even in its unfinished state, the palace had plenty of space for all kinds of fancy furnishings. The tour passed through room after room of expensive decorations, just a sample of which are shown above (flash photography was not allowed).

Of course, the decorations weren't limited to the walls and floors - the ceilings were actually the largest (and most difficult to loot) pieces of artwork in the palace.
